Karen Montanaro
August 25, 2009Tanzspiel Teaser
Karen is an outstanding performer, ballerina turned mimedancer. Mimedancer is her invention and it is the combination of two classical forms. Karen toured and taught internationally with Tony for over ten years. She put together Tanzspiel (German for “dance play”) which is a one-woman tour de force celebrating the expressive potential of the human body.
Enjoy this YouTube of her that includes clips of Karen performing over the years and Tanszpiel. Two years ago at the statewide arts education conference Karen “wowed” us with her performances making us laugh and watch her intensely. You might remember her soccer piece accompanied by my younger son.

She really is amazing! I was at the show with your son and it is an experience one never forgets. Karen is magical! She made me think of so many of my students who would benefit from a dance class at school. Thanks for sharing!
I’ve seen Karen during a residency with high school students and OH MY GOSH! I was so glad to have the opportunity, she is a Maine treasure that REALLY knows how to work with young people. I highly recommend having her for an artist residency. You will be very pleased! Thanks for your comment Lisa!
I would love to have her for an artist in residency. I am just not really sure how to go about the securing grants and money to have her come. Maybe a conversation to continue. . . .
Here are some suggestions Lisa for grants… go to the portaportal that I have and look for “Grants” and see if there are any there that might work. Here is the link to the arts ed webpages at the MDOE that has the directions to get to the portaportal: http://www.maine.gov/education/lres/vpa/portaportal.html. Secondly, I would communicate with Karen about the idea and go from there. Here is Karen’s email address KarenHM@maine.rr.com. Be sure and let her know that I suggested you contact her.
