A Capitol Celebration

December 8, 2009

Augusta Civic Center Alive with Music

It was a delight to see about 750 music students performing last evening at the Augusta Civic Center as part of the 4th annual “A Capitol Celebration”. The students were from grades 3-12 all in their concert best behavior and white shirts, black pants or skirts.

The high school concert and jazz bands were under the direction of Michael Scarpone, middle school band conducted by Dwight Tibbetts, middle school chorus conducted by Susan Pattershall, high school madrigals and choirs by Teresa Beaudoin, and the combined elementary grades 3-6 under the direction of Sharon Beaver, Marianne Tibbetts, Sue Pattershall, and Pam Morneau. Congratulations to all the teachers who did an outstanding job.

The students were WONDERFUL to watch and listen. The grand finale was the combination of the students singing and the bands playing in a medley of holiday favorites where the audience was asked to join. An art exhibit was on display in the lobby as well. As I gazed through the art work I listened to the conversations of proud parents and excited students and the comments about the performances. What would the holiday be without music?! What fun!

  1. Thank you for attending the concert and supporting the arts in Augusta Schools, Argy! Perhaps you might consider writing a letter of commendation to our Superintendent of Schools, Connie Brown, that might be read aloud at a School Board meeting.

As you probably know, we lost a high school art position last year when Christine Higgins retired. I am concerned that when my colleague, Margo Ogden, who teaches elementary art retires this year, we may be facing additional cuts.

You are a wonderful advocate for the arts in Maine Schools. Thank you for all you do!

  2. It was certainly my pleasure to participate. Interesting you would make that suggestion Robin since it was put on my “to do” list last night when I returned home from the concert! And a letter for Mayor Roger Katz as well who did a fabulous job as Master of Ceremonies last evening.

  3. You are wonderful, Argy! Thank you for your support and advocacy.
