Winter Activities in Maine
March 1, 2011G0 outside and enjoy the weather!
I raced home on Saturday morning after a wild adventure from NYC in time to change my clothes and head down to town. This is the 7th year for the annual winter ice fishing event for kids on Seven Tree Pond. It was almost a perfect day to hang out, eat hotdogs, drink hot chocolate and watch many kids for the first time try their hand at ice fishing. I loved the way some showed up with beach chairs and sat by their hole waiting for their flag to pop up. A young girl was making a snow angel… her creative mind helped her while waiting for her flag.
I left around lunchtime and headed home to warm my feet and get a nap in by the woodstove before heading to retired art teacher Anne Kofler’s for a sleigh ride. I went over the river and through the woods to Alna and arrived to a beautiful team of horses hitched up to a charming old sled that held four. I hopped up onto the front seat next to the teamster and trainer Steve Akeley from Damariscotta. We went for a delightful ride down the road a piece. I returned to visit with old friends and to warm my toes by the outdoor fire. And, yummy homemade donuts and hot chocolate and marshmallows. Yes, homemade marshmallows. I make many homemade items but never have I even thought about making marshmallows. I need the recipe! They were DELICIOUS and almost as much fun to toast and eat as the ride with the beautiful horses. I suggest if you ever have the opportunity to go for an old fashion sleigh ride that you don’t turn it down! If you’ve been on one, please add a comment below and let us know about it.

When my siblings and I were children in Harmony, ME our neighbor used to carry his morning milk cans to the local creamery on a horse-pulled sleigh. We would hop onto the runners and enjoy the ride to school!
Iris…What a wonderful childhood memory. I remember milk freezing on the door step and pushing the paper caps right off the top.
