July 6, 2011

Hans Rosling

A global health instructor understands that having the data is not enough. He has visualization at the heart of his work because he knows he needs to teach so people understand and find joy in it. In this YouTube from BBCFour you will see 200 Countries, 200 Years, 4 Minutes – The Joy of Stats and how Hans Rosling brings statistics to life utilizing technology.

Happy Birthday USA!

July 4, 2011

I love the family traditions during the 4th of July holiday. My parents were married on July 4th, 1942 which we celebrated as I was growing up with huge community picnics in our back yard. We had two family reasons to celebrate. I’ve heard my mother tell the story at least 100 times about how she waited until five after midnight to give birth to me so I’d have my own special day. I had mixed feelings about the cake always reading Happy Anniversary Sophie and George, Happy Birthday Argy! However, today I think fondly about the fun we had at the gatherings and appreciate my parents for the enormous picnics. Plain old fun!

After moving to Maine and having children we created our own traditions, attending the parade, followed by the chicken barbecue. Happy 4th of July to all of you, may your day be filled with wonderful memories.

2Cellos – Sulic and Hauser

July 3, 2011

Welcome to the Jungle

On this YouTube video, Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser play their arrangement of Welcome to the Jungle by Guns N’ Roses. These two cellists who call themselves 2Cellos met while they were teenagers in a masters class in Croatia. They became known after their cover of “Smooth Criminal” became a hit on YoutTube. I know they’re musicians but there is a whole lot of dance and theatre involved in them playing music. See and hear for yourself!

Integrating the Arts Across the Curriculum Webinar

July 1, 2011

Wednesday, July 19, 2011 2 p.m. EDT

Sandra Ruppert, director of the Arts Education Partnership and Shana Habel, dance demonstration teacher, Los Angeles Unified School District and co-president of the California Dance Education Association will present Integrating the Arts Across the Curriculum webinar.

Many arts advocates suggest integrating dance, music, theater, and visual arts across the curriculum holds great promise to enhance student learning—and revitalize the arts in public schools.

Although not a new idea, teaching “through” the arts appears to be gaining a stronger foothold, proponents say. Examples span the country and content areas. Take dance, where the art form has been used in a Baltimore County, Md., school to help teach scientific concepts like photosynthesis, and in suburban Minneapolis to bring the Underground Railroad to life.

A White House advisory panel recently made the case for “reinvesting” in arts education and drew special attention to arts integration, suggesting that it can boost student motivation and provide both academic and social benefits.

This webinar will explore the potential of bringing together the arts with other subjects in a mutual learning experience and point to promising examples, as well as the challenges to ensure that such efforts achieve their academic goals.
