Happy New School Year

September 6, 2011

Changing of the seasons

Sculptures at the Schoodic Sculpture Symposium

Starting a new school year is like the changing of the seasons. I always try to do something on Labor Day weekend that is fun and different because it feels like going from summer to fall (even though I know the calendar doesn’t match that).

This year my husband and I traveled to Cutler in Washington County to hike the Bold Coast Trail. It is a place that I have read about and have been wanting to go for some time.

Finally, everything lined up and we headed north yesterday. We stopped in Prospect Harbor to see the work of the artists at the Schoodic Sculpture Symposium and then on to Machias. Early to rise we reached the trail head at 7:30 and headed for the coast. The sweeping vista was so much more dramatic than any of the photos I’ve seen of it. Every time we were at a spot along the water it looked slightly different. The colors from the light, the water, the shoreline of rocks, grasses, trees, bushes, and all the details impacted my site dramatically. As well, the weather kept changing from sunshine to fog to grey stormy- like skies and back again. The temperature kept changing as well; damp, cool, hot, humid, chilly and down right pleasant!

Bold Coast Trail in Cutler

In spite of the many changes, it was a most delightful day, a great way to spend Labor Day and the last official day of “summer” in my teacher mind! I know I can always take out my photos of the day and be right back there at the Bold Coast!

I hope you had a wonderful day as well and Happy New School Year to YOU! May your school year be filled with success for all your students!

Happy New School Year!

Teachers will be invited to contribute tools, resources, and examples of quality assessments and supportive standards based curriculum documents for all to access.

Each webinar will be recorded and added to the MLTI Archives for future viewing. Information on where the archived webinars will be posted on the MDOE arts ed webpages at http://www.maine.gov/education/lres/vpa/assessment.html I suggest that you attend the webinars with other teachers and follow-up with a discussion about applying the information in your school/district. Maine Educational Theatre Conference

September 3, 2011

Maine EdTA

Maine Educational Theatre Conference, October 14 at USM Russell Hall, Gorham.  Maine EdTA is a chapter of the national organization that sponsors the INternational Thespian Society, a drama honor society for high school and middle school students.  Although Maine has had Thespian Society troupes for 30 to 40 years, the state chapter organization in their support was organized just three years ago.  This will be our fourth annual conference at USM.

The conference will consist of workshops led by working professionals in southern Maine.  Students are invited to perform monologues, short scenes or songs for adjudication to earn an invitation to perform at the International Thespian Festival in Nebraska in June.  Maine EdTA will also award a college scholarship of $1,000 to a worthy student selected through an application process and an interview at the conference.

For the last two years, the conference has hosted about 175 students from across the state.  The conference is open to all students from Maine high schools.  Information about the conference is available at http://www.northeastedta.org/Maine.html or by contacting Rick Osann, the state Chapter Director, at rosann@bonnyeagle.org.

Ticket to Ride

September 2, 2011

Transportation funding

The Ticket to Ride program began in 2010 with start up funding provided by the Jane B. Cook 1992 Charitable Trust and matched by the Maine Arts Commission. In 2011, the agency received support from the Betterment Fund that will allow the program to continue for a further three years.

The program provides funding to defray the cost of travel for Maine schools wishing to visit Maine arts based venues and events as part of a well rounded curriculum. Any K-12 school in Maine is eligible to receive support of up to $300 each school year and any K-12 school in Maine with a documented free and reduced lunch student population of 50 percent or greater is eligible to receive support of up to $500 each school year

Ticket to Ride is the Maine Arts Commission’s response to the decline in school day student attendance at Maine arts based venues and events that has been documented across the state. This decline has been directly linked to the high cost of student transportation and has impacted both the student body of the state of Maine as well as the venues and organizations that rely on the sale of student tickets to fuel the creative economy and to provide school day learning experiences in the arts.

Ticket to Ride is designed for ease of administration; school personnel need only download and complete two simple one-page documents to be eligible for funding. The only other requirement is the provision of a 250 word or less narrative of the experience within two weeks of the trip taking place. This final report helps the Maine Arts Commission secure funding to continue the Ticket to Ride program.

The Maine Arts Commission respectfully requests that Ticket to Ride funds not be used to replace existing transportation funds in school budgets but rather to supplement them when necessary. Schools are welcome to use Ticket to Ride funds in combination with transportation funds that may be available from individual Maine arts based venues and events.

Schools contracting with Cyr Bus Lines are asked to contact General Manager Rick Soules and to mention the Ticket to Ride program.

Click here for instructions on how to receive Ticket to Ride funding for your school.

Parties interested in funding or partnering on the Ticket to Ride program are asked to contact Angela Molino at Angela.A.Molino@maine.gov or 207/287-6720
