WhooOoooo HooOooo – Phoenix
November 1, 20113 day meeting
I left my home this morning with about 4 inches of snow on the ground and drove to Portland where I hopped on a plane for Phoenix. I had a 2 hour layover in Philadelphi and headed for AZ for sunny warm weather. It was 91 degrees when I landed. Wow, like stepping back into July.
There are 31 of my colleagues from the other states here for a three day meeting. The State Education Agency Directors of Arts Education (SEADAE) are gathering to engage with members of the National Coalition for Core Arts Standards. It is exciting, I will be posting this week and keeping you informed about the work.

What is the discussion about media arts? Media arts as in photography, film, digital, etc. are media (mediums) and can easily be incorporated into the other areas of art. AP has included these media as two-dimensional design. Isn’t the message the message, not the media the message?
You can follow the discussion that happened today in Phoenix at http://nccas.wikispaces.com/. There is streaming video of the conversation. The blog post on November 1st will give you the outcome of the conversation.
It seems that there were a number of stakeholders (no pun intended) there in Phoenix that were pushing the concept of media, such as we tend to call “news media”, and in watching (reading) the transcript they tended to take “media arts” out of context. One thing that did come up that I liked was the reference to “new media” being an outdated term (almost 15 years now, is it still “new”?). A thing I didn’t like was the three branch concept of “media” that included computer programming… completely different field, but engineers with “arts” background are highly sought!
Keep up the good work, we will keep an eye on your comings and goings!
Yes, defining it and coming to a common understanding in the country is part of the conversation. Do you think that is possible country-wide Charlie?
