2013 Congressional Art Competition

Congratulations are in order!

Congressman Michael Michaud and Congresswoman Chellie Pingree have announced the winners of the 2013 Congressional Art Competition in Maine. Brianna Hall of Rangeley Lakes Regional School and Eliza Hazen of York, a senior at Berwick Academy, were selected by a panel of experts to represent Maine in a year-long show in Washington, D.C. These students are among over 700,000 that have now taken part in this contest nationwide.

The 2013 first place winners will be joined by four runners-up from each congressional district when they meet with representatives from the Congressional Offices at a Blaine House reception held in their honor. This event is the culmination of a close partnership between the Maine Arts Commission and Maine’s Congressional offices.

Annual Student Exhibit

Center for Maine Contemporary Art

On Saturday, April 27 the opening for the Annual Student Exhibition at the Center for Maine Contemporary Art in Rockport was held. The CMCA staff worked with Camden Hills Regional High School art teacher Carolyn Brown to organize arts activities for children and families which saw around 330 guests! Student volunteers from CHRHS helped with the activities for younger children.

This year the show includes student work from Appleton Village School, Hope Elementary School, Lincolnville Central School, Camden-Rockport Elementary School, C-R Middle School, Camden Hills Regional High School, PeoplePlace Cooperative Preschool, Ashwood Waldorf School, Riley School, Children’s House Montessori School and the Community School.

The exhibition will be open until May 12, Thursday -Sunday, 1-5 pm.

Performing at Maine Maritime Academy graduation

“Lucy & the Diamonds” from George Stevens Academy will perform at the Maine Maritime Academy Graduation on Saturday, May 4 at 10:15am.

Under the direction of Steve Orlofsky the combo will have a different look since it we will be missing Oliver Scott, bass & Nicholas Steenberg, guitar who will be taking mandatory SAT’s.

“Lucy & the Diamonds” welcome Matthew Stephens, bass, Lorna Stephens & Kenzie Tefft on vocals in addition to Peter Howell, trombone, David Reinke, piano, Gavin Rogers, drums & the one & only Lucy Jakub on vibes!

  • Fletcher Kittredge, chief executive of Internet and telephone company GWI of Biddeford said workers need a foundation in creative thinking more than they need training in technology that may quickly become obsolete.”Start out with an art degree. Being able to be creative, to interact with people, is more likely to be important for someone’s career,” Kittredge told the Joint Select Committee on Maine’s Workforce and Economic Future. “A lot of what we think of as STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) — that’s out of date. OVERALL MAAI PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Create an environment in Maine where assessment in arts education is an integral part of the work all arts educators do to improve student achievement in the arts.

The initiative has been building capacity by training arts educators on the “what” and “how” of arts assessment so they can provide the leadership in Maine through professional development opportunities. OVERALL OBJECTIVES

Devise a statewide plan for assessment in arts education, which includes professional development opportunities, regionally and statewide, to expand on the knowledge and skills of teachers to improve teaching and learning.
