Surreal Self-Portraits
July 22, 2013Media arts
When we talk about Media Arts, the new and 5th discipline being included in the National Core Arts Standards there are multiple ideas. What is media arts and what does it look like, who is teaching it, and which students are taking the courses? Is it being integrated into course work, grade level content, or is it standing alone? When I search the images on Zev’s site, demilked, a 14-year old from MA I think it is an example of Media Arts. This isn’t all it is but it is included in the term Media Arts. See for yourself and consider what and how you’re teaching.

Dear Argy,
Your posts are always inspiring — I often share them with friends and family — but today’s story , Surreal Self-Portraits, and Zev’s link generated SO MUCH good feeling. Comments included: “Very cool!,” “Truly wonderful!,” “Love the ‘yarn bombing!,'” “What a great person this lady is!” and many more like that.
We’re lucky to have you for a friend/advocate,
Charlotte
Thank you Charlotte! It is great to know that you’re following the blog and sharing info with friends and family! Thanks for the work you do supporting the arts year after year! ~Argy
Hi Argy,
The new iPads for 7th and 8th graders as imaged by MLTI have an app called Sketch X which will allow students to create layered images and achieve results akin to what Zev created. This iPad tool will allow me to introduce a digital photography unit that includes photo manipulation to create student self portraits. It is so much fun to do… I was truly inspired by Zev’s work and thank you so much for posting it. I can’t wait to do this unit with my students!

Yes, I saw Sketch X in June and was very impressed as well! All kinds of possibilities – looking forward to seeing the results from Maine students! ~Argy
