Summer Youth Music Camp

Screen shot 2014-01-28 at 9.28.58 AMOrono, Maine — Registration is underway for Maine Summer Youth Music (MSYM) Camp at the University of Maine.

Junior Camp, for students in grades 5-8, is July 13-18 and Senior Camp, for students in grades 8-12, is July 19-27. Eighth-grade students may attend either or both camps.

Campers study with UMaine faculty and public school music teachers while staying in a residence hall on the Orono campus. Vocal and instrumental opportunities include symphonic band, jazz band, string ensemble, chorus, and musical theater, along with master classes and evening concerts. Senior campers may work with Joan deAlbuquerque, guest conductor from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.

Grammy Music Educator Award

Screen shot 2014-01-21 at 10.57.19 PMNAfME is pleased to announce that the recipient of the inaugural GRAMMY Music Educator Award is Kent Knappenberger. Knappenberger teaches grades 6-12 at Westfield (New York) Academy and Central School. He was one of more than 30,000 music teachers from throughout the United States who had been nominated. He was chosen from a group of 10 finalists, all of whom are or have been members of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME).

Knappenberger has been a music teacher and choir director at Westfield Academy and Central School for 25 years. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York at Fredonia and a master’s degree in music education, harp performance and literature from Eastman School of Music. Arts Learning Grant

Maine Arts Commission announces arts education available funding

IMG_0772Things are cooking at the Maine Arts Commission as the grant programs are being posted for the next fiscal year.

The deadline for the Arts Learning grant, of up to $5000 with a half match are available to apply for until April 15, 2014.

This program provides funding to support high quality visual and/or performing arts education for PK-12 learners and/or educators of this population.

The learning opportunity must take place between July 1, 2014 and June 30, 2015. Funding will be made available after July 1, 2014. I urge you to take a look at this opportunity and collaborate with your colleagues, teaching artists, and/or community members to consider ideas.

Criteria

Grant proposals are reviewed on a competitive basis using the following criteria:

  1. Demonstration of high quality arts education teaching and learning opportunity.
  2. Clear description of the project and its impact.
  3. Evidence of significant collaborative planning among all partners and capacity to carry it out.
  4. Description of evaluation methodology with clear objectives and outcomes.
  5. Assurance that the project will include certified and highly qualified arts educators, trained teaching artists and will provide professional development opportunities where appropriate.

This group was started through the Harlow Gallery to support area arts educators. It is a very unique partnership with a community art gallery – A great opportunity to connect with your colleagues. Consider inviting an educator from another discipline. Collaborative connections encouraged.

There are only 4 meetings a year and the agenda will follow what the participating educators propose, including sharing lesson plans.

College Board Arts Awards

Screen shot 2014-01-23 at 3.49.01 PMThe College Board Award for Excellence and Innovation in the Arts celebrates the achievements of arts initiatives for students in grades 6–12 that promote learning and creativity in exemplary and innovative ways.

Awards will be given to model programs in three categories:

  1. Arts Integration: Recognizes initiatives that use an innovative approach to drawing connections between arts-based learning and other subjects.
  2. Equity Through Arts: Recognizes a program that uses the arts as a tool for increasing academic engagement among underserved students.
  3. Civic Engagement/Professional Partnerships: Recognizes a program that uses arts experiences as vehicles for engagement with local arts professionals and/or nonprofit organizations.

Within each of these three categories, one award in the amount of $5,000 will be given to winning schools to support the continuation and growth of their arts programs. Among the three winning schools, one will be named the national winner and will be awarded an additional $2,500.

The application deadline is April 4, 2014. Further details on award categories, full application instructions, and profiles of past winners can be found at artsaward.collegeboard.org.

Arts Education K-12 Reform References

U.S. Department of Education

The “Your U.S. Department of Education Bookshelf” provides resources to the public on a variety of education topics. Their K-12 presentation, for example, offers findings from a longitudinal study which shows:

  • Students who had arts-rich experiences in high school showed higher overall GPAs than students who lacked these experiences.
  • Arts-engaged high school students enrolled in competitive colleges—and in four-year colleges in general—at higher rates than students with low arts engagement.
  • Low-income students with arts-rich experiences in high school were more than three times as likely to earn a bachelor’s degree as low-income students without arts-rich experiences in school.

How to Raise Money

Free workshop for Arts Organizations

Wishcamper Center at University of Southern Maine, Bedford Street, Portland, ME

Larry Rubenstein will present a free, day-long workshop for board chairs and executive directors of arts organizations at the University of Southern Maine on February 6, 2014. This workshop, which will provide fundraising guidance, is designed for teams of two people per arts organization: the Executive Director and the Board Chair, or Development Committee Chair.

There is a limit for the workshop for 10 organizations, and complete applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Click to register

The workshop will provide participants with the necessary tools to approach potential donors and take the fear out of the “ask.” Specifically, participants will learn the following:·

·         How to make the phone call to get an appointment;
·         Where to have the appointment;
·         Who should participate;
·         How do you ask;

Talk About Advocacy

A letter to the Madawaska Community from music teacher, Ed Boynton

photoTo the Madawaska Community and Madawaska Music Department:

The Madawaska community should be very proud of the  FANTASTIC ALL AROOSTOOK MUSIC FESTIVAL that took place this past weekend, January 17 and 18.  The food was great, the rehearsal venues were superb, the organization excellent.  But of all the wonderful parts of this weekend event, it was the friendliness and helpfulness of the people of the Madawaska community that made this such a special event.

The long hours of work by the parents, students, and staff of Madawaska Schools paid off.   Music Director Josh Bosse has done outstanding work with the students of the Valley, and has given infinite hours of dedicated service to the students and community.

Madawaska has a great deal to be proud of.  And I think I speak for the musicians and teachers from all over the County:  GREAT FESTIVAL, GREAT WORK, GREAT COMMUNITY!!!  It was an awesome ALL AROOSTOOK BAND FESTIVAL.
