Fine Arts Academy begins with Visual Art option – September 2014

Bangor High School will offer an exciting program option beginning in the fall of 2014 for any student interested in concentrated, 4-year study of visual art. The BHS Fine Arts Academy was approved for continued development by the Bangor School Committee based on an innovative approach to curricular and extended study of visual art, a model that will expand to the performing arts (music, theater) in 2015. Read the program overview (PDF download).

Following a common introductory course The Creative Process, students choose one of three visual arts curricular pathways (Digital / Commercial, Two-Dimensional, Three-Dimensional) and extend their classroom work through school and community-based seminars and summer study. The culminating experience is a Senior Capstone in concert with the corresponding Advanced Placement (AP) course that yields a portfolio of exceptional depth and quality and distinguishes students for continued work and study in the arts following graduation.

Coming in March

Jamie Bernstein and the Impact of Music Education: On March 17, we’ll be hosting a free event at Merrill Auditorium celebrating music education and ‘Music in Our Schools Month’ featuring Jamie Bernstein. Jamie is the daughter of the Leonard Bernstein and will be narrating the PSO’s performance of ’Bernstein by Bernstein’. From 6pm – 7pm, music and arts educators are encouraged to join us in Merrill Auditorium’s Rehearsal Hall for a celebration of recent music education achievements from throughout the state. From 7pm – 8pm, everyone is invited to join us in the main hall for a conversation between Music Director Robert Moody and Jamie Bernstein about the impact that music education has had in their lives. This event is free although registration is required: https://portsymph.wufoo.com/forms/jamie-bernstein-and-the-impact-of-music-education/.

Additionally, we’re happy to announce that our Spring KinderKonzerts have been posted to our website. KinderKonzerts are a fun, interactive introduction to live orchestral music for children ages 3-7. Through instrument demonstration, active listening, and narrative story-telling, audience members learn all about the families of instruments that make up an orchestra. Concerts last about 40 minutes. A partial schedule is currently available on our website. We will be adding more dates soon for Portland, Kennebunk, Waldoboro, Lewiston, and Fryeburg. David Rufo’s discovery

Some time ago Bucksport art teacher Linda Babb sent me a link to an article that was published in October 2013. Many teachers send me links to interesting articles, videos, and other information. I place them in a draft for a blog post and when I have a minute I go back to the drafts and publish them. Linda found the article interesting and so do I. Not only is this article interesting but the source is as well. Some of the following is taken directly from ALT/space which is a project of the Teaching Artist Journal. It is a peer reviewed print and online quarterly publication that provides a space to hear from teaching artists and for “all those working at the intersection of art and learning”. Doesn’t that pertain to all arts educators? The teaching artists are from all over the world so the global perspective is provided by nature of the authors. I hope you will check it out and subscribe online.

The article that Linda sent is called Math Journal Graffiti and located at http://tajaltspace.com/post/64163415848/math-journal-graffiti-david-rufo#sthash.4jWvRnEI.dpuf. David Rufo is an artist/teacher/researcher working on his PhD at Syracuse University in Art Education. With seventeen years experience as a general classroom fourth grade teacher, David’s current research interest is the self-initiated creativity of children in a child-centered environment. In addition to being a full-time teacher, David is also an adjunct instructor at Syracuse University where he has created and taught a course titled, Art Educators as Contemporary Artists. His most recent article titled, “Building Forts and Drawing on Walls: Fostering Student Initiated Creativity Inside and Outside the Elementary Classroom,” was published in the May 2012 issue of the peer-reviewed journal, Art Education.

David is interested in the marks people have made in history as well as the marks children make. He pulled out old workbooks from a cabinet and found the markings that his students had left. The usual drawings often found in the corners of pages, in the margins of papers; hearts, animals, figures, etc. He has considered the transformation his classroom has gone through provided a restricted environment to a more relaxed one to encourage the development and use of creativity.

Check out the article to read more about David’s thinking and to see some of these priceless drawings made by his students in their math notebooks!

Music in Waterville

February 13, 2014

Program receives big boost

From Waterville Jr. and Sr. High Schools music teacher and District IV chair and MAAI teacher leader, Sue Barre:

We had some fun in our corner of the music world tonight.  What a gift! Tonight our program received 21 new instruments, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, 4 flutes, 4 clarinets, 3 alto saxophones, 1 tenor saxophone and a electric guitar – FOR FREE!!!!  The Galen Cole Foundation whose philosophy is to “pay it forward” – so the high school students are to learn secondary instruments and then work with the younger students in trade for these instruments that the school will have use of forever!  There is much good in the world – and tonight we got a piece of it :-)!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                    CONTACT: Susan Danly
February 3, 2014                                            1-207-233-0896; susandanly@gmail.com

Screen shot 2014-02-03 at 10.06.34 PMMONHEGAN—Applications are being accepted for the Monhegan Artists’ Residency for emerging Maine artists. In addition to two five-week residencies on Monhegan Island for Maine-based visual artists, the program offers a two-week residency for a Maine art teacher.
“Thanks to the generous support of individual donors, the Quimby Family Foundation, and the Horizon Foundation, we are again able to support three residencies this year,” said Susan Danly, chair of the board of directors.

The application deadline for all three residencies is March 15, 2014. This year the applications for the residency program are being accepted on-line only. For guidelines, a history of the program, and a list of past residents, visit monheganartistsresidency.org. Applicants will be notified by April 1 of the jury’s decision.

The residency program provides living quarters, studio space, and a $100 per week stipend. The 2014 residencies for emerging artists run May 3-July 4 and September 6-October 10. Only Maine residents are eligible to apply. The Maine art teacher residency runs July 5-18 to accommodate the school year schedule.

Now in its 25th year, the residency program is aimed at visual artists working in painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, sculpture, or the digital arts. An important goal of the program is to enhance the careers of serious artists who have yet to gain wide recognition. Quality of work is the primary criterion for selection. A jury of art professionals, to be announced on the website, will select the 2014 artists.

Previous Monhegan artist residents include Sarah Knock, Marguerite Robichaux, David Vickery, Lynn Travis, Joe Kievitt, Jim Dugan, Karen Adrienne, Emily Trenholm and Kenny Cole, who currently has a solo show at the University of Maine Museum of Art.
Founded in 1989, the Monhegan Artists’ Residency program is a volunteer-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit supported by donors, art galleries, corporate sponsors, and foundation grants. For more information, visit monheganartistsresidency.org.

Performance at PMA

February 7, 2014

View the video of an artist “installation”/performance at the Portland Museum of Art that took place last weekend. Certainly might provide “food for thought”. You will see that this piece was created by many. Artist Clint Fulkerson formed this “tape team” to “create a spontaneous collaborative drawing using masking tape to cover the Great Hall of the Portland Museum of Art on January 31st, 2014.” Thanks to Jo Martyn-Fisher for sending this information!
