Maine Sunday Telegram
On the front page of yesterdays Maine Sunday Telegram the headline reads: WHO SAYS ARTISTS NEED TO BE STRUGGLING? At Maine College of Art, they’re also CREATING A LIVING. The article written by Whit Richardson is a comprehensive look at the changes that MECA has made to include in the educational program that goes beyond learning to make art. The goal is to graduate students who have the knowledge to make a living.
In 2010 Don Tuski took over as president of MECA and has made a point of adding this as part of student education. The statistics are changing in part due to the swing in courses available. 67% of MECA graduates are employed as professional artists versus the national art school average of 56%. An Artists at Work department was established that includes courses such as “The Art of Business”. “Workshops include public speaking, how to use Linkedin and perfecting your “elevator pitch” to a prospective client or investor.”
