Maine Art Education Association

Youth Art Month Show

The Maine Education Association will once again host the Maine Art Education Association Youth Art Month Student Show at their offices in Augusta. The artwork will be on view from February through November, and will include a celebration on Sunday, March 8, 2020.
There are 30 spots available to MAEA-MEA members that will be filled on first-come basis. Horace-Mann underwrites artwork framing, which is beautifully done. If you would like to participate in this show, email me at lisa.ingraham@msad59.org.
If you have a piece of student artwork in the current show, please pick it up at or before the November MAEA Board meeting on November 14, 2019. You may also drop off a piece of your own artwork to hang until the new student work goes up in February.

Teachers’ Night Out

Portland Stage

Annually Portland Stage offer a Teachers’ Night Out. The evening begins with a reception in our Theater for Kids space where you will have the opportunity to learn more about our education programming, followed by a complimentary performance for you & a guest to one of our Mainstage productions.

This year the event will take place on Saturday, November 2nd. The reception will begin at 7pm for an 8pm performance. If you would like to attend, email with your name, the name of your guest (if applicable), your school, and the grade(s) and subject(s) you teach. Space is limited, so reserve your spot today!

Professional Development

Portland Stage Professional Development offerings include:
1. Theater and Literacy: using theatrical tools to enhance connections to the written word, encourage character/story recall, inspire active storytelling, and engage further with text.
2. Collaboration and Team-Building

In-School Programs

At Portland Stage, we have developed a series of Education Programs for Elementary, Middle, and High School levels that connect to and reinforce State & National Standards. Our In-School programming focuses on building and enhancing literacy, cultural awareness, collaborative play, and creative thinking through a multidimensional approach to learning. Palaver Strings

Welcome Home

Welcome Home celebrates the vitality of Maine’s immigrant communities through music and storytelling. Palaver Strings will collaborate with guest artists of Franco-American, Burundian, and Iraqi heritage, sharing traditional music and personal stories of their families’ journeys to Maine. As we tour with this program around Maine, we will celebrate Maine’s cultural diversity, reflect on our own histories, and create space for dialogue between performers and listeners from different backgrounds. We believe deep listening and empathy for unfamiliar experiences is an important part of making Maine a safe and inclusive home for everyone.

Come join Palaver Strings, the Greater Portland Immigrant Welcome Center, and Portland Ovations to hear stories of courage, resilience, travel, and transition from three of Maine’s immigrant communities. Facilitated by Marty Pottenger, guests will be invited to share their own experiences and how and why they call Portland home.  Attendees will also be encouraged to add their stories and reflections to the Welcome Home participatory art installation created by Portland-based artist, Titi de Baccarat. Featuring Welcome Home speakers Kifah Abdulla, Alain Iginareza, and Rhea Côté-Robbins, as well as musicians from Palaver Strings.

Americans Who Tell the Truth

Samantha Smith Challenge

Americans Who Tell the Truth is excited to announce that the registration for the 2019-2020 Samantha Smith Challenge (SSC) is now open! As we launch the sixth year of the SSC, we know that middle school students across Maine will be tackling important issues and modeling for all of us what it means to be an engaged citizen.
The following quotation from a 2018-19 SSC student gives us hope for the future and makes us smile just a little:
“The Samantha Smith Challenge inspired us to take action on these issues that have been going on for decades and inspired us to not be couch potatoes.” 
We are enthusiastic that this year’s SSC will continue its focus on the different aspects of individual and group identities as students learn to become change-making citizens. We are again asking SSC students to think first about their own identity, considering identity in terms of peace, ethnicity, gender, age, and also those identities that are easier to experiment with — beliefs, clothing styles, groups they join, issues that engage, etc. How do these characteristics affect expectations they have for themselves and expectations others have for them? How can knowing the characteristics of their own identity enhance their appreciation for the identities of others?
Then, as they look around, in their community or across the state, nations, and world, think about these identities and expectations affect others. How does this combination of identity and expectation connecting t o the justice and equity issues they see? Finally, select issues of concern and become activists! All of the steps are provided in the SSC guidelines.

Mark your calendars for this year’s celebration which will be held on Monday, June 1, 2020. Besides having the opportunity to share important work on many social justice issues, there will be an inspirational program that emphasizes how important youth activism is to our world; and, once again, there will be the portrait unveiling of a young activist!

As in past years, Robert Shetterly and Connie Carter are available to do workshops with your students. It is always a highlight to meet your students and experience their energy and actions for their chosen issues.

Maine Thespian Festival

The Maine Thespian Festival, formerly known as the Maine Educational Theatre Conference, will be held on Friday, October 25 at UMaine Orono campus. The festival is hosted by the University of Maine, Department of Theatre, Orono. It is designed for teachers and students and there are plenty of opportunities taking place throughout the day.

The featured speaker will be Dawn McAndrews, Artistic Director from the Theater at Monmouth, speaking on Making Connections. The featured performance will be selections from “Die Geborgenheit” by Emily Eberhart, class of 2017, a student-written selection from the Maine Young Playwrights’ Festival.

This image came through recently from them JUST when I was thinking about the importance of the topic of “liking and respecting” – students and teachers. I couldn’t agree with this more! It is not the first time that T2T images with a thoughtful saying provided me a time to pause and reflect.

Interactive Theatre for social change 

Consider providing a unique opportunity for your students to explore the intersection of art and social history? The Maine State Museum and Maine State Library invites you to join Portland Stage for an interactive Theatre for Social Change workshop exploring the images, concepts, and stories of the women’s suffrage movement. The workshop is designed to put the stories of the movement into the hands and hearts of students, allowing them to examine their personal connection to the struggles and victories of the past.  Each workshop session will begin with an educator-led introduction the museum’s exhibition Women’s Long Road – 100 Years to the Vote.
