Professional Development Workshop for Maine Teachers – April 1

april1jpg

Lesley University’s Creative Arts in Learning Division proposes to offer a professional development workshop for teachers in your district focusing on creatively implementing the Common Core State Standards. The 2-hour workshop will introduce teachers to strategies for designing curriculum and pedagogy that utilize creative processes across the disciplines to implement Common Core State Standards.  Just one example is preparing students to “actively seek the wide, deep, and thoughtful engagement with high-quality literary and informational texts [drawn from all of the arts] that builds knowledge, enlarges experience, and broadens worldviews.”[i]   The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education points out that it is important to select “informational texts and multimedia resources to create coherent curriculum units that link science, social studies [and] the arts.” [ii]   This workshop is offered at no cost to the district.

Design of the Program

The district-wide professional development workshop will be offered for teachers across disciplines and grade levels.  The workshop will focus on creative strategies to support teachers in integrating creative movement, drama, music, poetry, storytelling, and visual arts into teaching and learning activities.  At the conclusion of the workshop, teachers will have the opportunity to imagine creative project-based learning activities that meet Common Core State Standards in their classrooms.

The Creativity and Common Core workshop is designed to address best practices in education that Cambridge’s Superintendent Young identified in his district’s 2011 Innovation Agenda.  These include “engaging students in project-based and experiential learning, interdisciplinary curriculum and instruction … and providing professional support for teachers to provide effective differentiated instruction.”

Workshop Leader

Martha McKenna is University Professor and Director of the Creativity Commons at Lesley University. A senior administrator of the University for 27 years, Dr. McKenna founded the Creativity Commons in 2011 to support innovation in teaching and learning.  The Creativity Commons is committed to active learning, scholarly research, critical inquiry, and diverse forms of artistic practice through the development of close mentoring relationships with students, faculty, and practitioners in the field.

Standards-based classroom videos

IMG_4009It was great to have a chance to visit art teacher and Maine Arts Assessment Initiative (MAAI) Teacher Leader Brian McPherson’s classroom at the Woodside Elementary School in Topsham. Debi Lynne Baker and I traveled there recently to video tape Brian “in action”. The school is very welcoming with artwork everywhere.

Our day was filled with interviews with Brian and parents and colleagues, including principal Richard Dedek. The highlight was talking with students and visiting Brian’s classes. One class was drawing vessels using giant Chinese containers for models.

At the conclusion of the day there was a reception for students and families celebrating Chinese New Year and most importantly to view the clay relief sculptures based on Chinese architecture. Kudos to the students and Brian for a wonderful exhibit. Marvelous!

Debi Lynne is busy editing the hours of video footage to create another video showing standards-based arts education as a part of the resources provided by MAAI. All the videos that are available are posted on the Maine ARTSEducation YouTube channel. To learn more and view the videos please go to https://mainearts.maine.gov/Pages/Education/MAAI-VIDEOS.

Final Public Review for NCAS

January 3, 2014

Launching in February – Arts Standards review

Screen shot 2013-12-20 at 1.43.54 PMThe National Coalition for Core Arts Standards (NCCAS) has scheduled a final public review of the draft PreK-12 arts standards in dance, media arts, music, theatre, and visual arts.

The review will open February 14, 2014, and close February 28. A draft reading copy of the revised standards will be available at http://nccas.wikispaces.com on January 30.

This third and concluding review reflects NCCAS’s ongoing commitment to a responsive and transparent strategy that allows adequate time for each arts discipline’s standards writing team to incorporate changes to the drafts suggested by reviewers. To fully address the standards content and structural changes, the coalition has revised the project’s timeline. The February review is the first in a series of new and significant benchmarks for NCCAS, leading to the web-based release of the standards in June, 2014.

Currently, the writing teams are creating a set of overarching anchor standards that articulate an alignment of artistic practice among the five art forms. Upon completion of that process, the teams will review their individual discipline standards to ensure that they are appropriately parallel with the anchor standards. The teams are also finalizing examples of model cornerstone assessments to include in the February draft review.

There will be a rolling “first-glance” version of the final standards available beginning in March. This document will showcase the fundamental structure and content of the arts standards in order to give teachers, decision makers, and the public a better understanding of what will be included and how they will inform teaching and learning.

NCCAS is the coalition of national arts and education organizations and media arts representatives that are developing the 2014 National Core Arts Standards. The new, voluntary grade-by-grade web-based standards are intended to affirm the place of arts education in a balanced core curriculum, support the 21st-century needs of students and teachers, and help ensure that all students are college and career ready. The arts standards emphasize “big ideas,” philosophical foundations, enduring understandings/essential questions, and anchor/performance standards, all of which are intended to guide the curriculum development and instructional practices that leads to arts literacy for all students.

To find out how to participate in the February review process and to view all public documents related to the arts standards, visit http://nccas.wikispaces.com/.

Khan Academy Goes to MOMA

November 14, 2013

Charlie Johnson’s info on Khan Academy

IMG_1875Charles Johnson is not new to the world of Art education. He has taught for over 38 years, was a 2008 finalist for Maine Teacher of the Year, a Phase 1, 2, and 3 Maine Arts Assessment Initiative Teacher Leader, and teaches at Mount Desert Island High School where his leadership skills are used on a daily basis. A video was created last year for the MAAI standards-based education work of Charlie and his school. Charlie partnered with MDIHS principal Matt Haney for the workshop he presented recently at the Arts Education: Leading the Way state arts education conference at UMaine. This blog post was written by Charlie after he took a look and a second look at Khan Academy and learned what is being offered for Art education. You can use Charlie’s findings and go a step further and check it out for yourself. Thanks Charlie!

I looked at the Khan Academy web site and signed on as a member a couple of years ago after reading Inevitable (Schwahn & McGarvey) and feeling that a lot of direct instruction might be placed in the hands of students if there were some web resources that were engaging and contained quality content. On first entering the site, I was pleased by the range of content across a number of subjects, mostly math. I did find some “Art History” resources, but they left me cold for high school age students as the recordings were done over still photography of work in museums, the narration was somewhat dry, and the sound quality was varied, even within single videos.

This fall I noticed that one of my advisee students had signed up for AP Math, and so I asked him how he made such a leap from the year before. I knew he was interested in math, but had gotten a slow start at his elementary school. His answer was simple, Khan Academy. He had gone through the Algebra series on Khan and pretested for entry into advanced placement class at our school.

His experience was in the back of my mind when I got this recent notice from a “LinkedIn” group I belong to, the National Art Education Association. I would, by the way, suggest any art education professional look at these “groups” as they often have tremendous teaching help and advocacy information posts as well as many discussions around art education topics. The link this group took me to is http://ow.ly/qutGe and while it has an interesting video on the oil painting technique of Ad Reinhardt, it was the direct MOMA tutorial link to Khan Academy that really got me “all wrapped up”! https://www.khanacademy.org/partner-content/MoMA took me to a “partner-content” (I wish Khan would do one with the National Gallery as well) page where there are dozens and dozens of links to contemporary artists speaking about their work, seventeen videos on the 1913 Centennial Celebration of MOMA’s holdings, videos on printmaking, artistic styles and arts interviews. The deeper I got into the site, the more I discovered.

This is a new and improved Khan (Art) Academy from just a couple of years ago, with well designed (YouTube) video, interesting (and to the point) “mini lectures” on historical pieces and their contexts, and numerous “how-to” segments that give foundational information about the techniques and equipment for producing art in a variety of media. I would strongly suggest taking a tour through this collaboration between MOMA and Khan. It may not be for everyone, but it is much more student-friendly and interesting, suggesting that Salman Khan “gets it”, has a “growth” mindset, and is constantly striving to improve.

NCAS Feedback

October 18, 2013

Window of opportunity!

Screen shot 2013-09-30 at 6.31.39 AMI was a little surprised to learn yesterday that very few people from Maine have contributed feedback on the high school draft of the National Core Arts Standards. Fortunately, it is not to late. You have until Monday, October 21 to provide your feedback on the National Core Arts Standards. Yes, your window of opportunity is coming to a close. Don’t miss this chance to read the high school draft and respond to what you think, what questions you have, and your general feedback. It is not everyday that you are asked to think deeply about standards that are being developed.

Please represent Maine and participate in the public review by going to http://nccas.wikispaces.com and click on the links to the review surveys. The surveys include the 5 disciplines; music, theatre, visual arts, dance, and media arts. You can respond to one or more than one.

Lynn Tuttle

Lynn Tuttle

This is good timing for Maine since Lynn Tuttle, Director of Arts Education from Arizona Department of Education, is presenting at the statewide conference Arts Education: Leading the Way next Thursday, October 24. She will provide a presentation at the opening session and a follow-up session where you can learn more about the draft document. Lynn has been working as a leader in the National Coalition for Core Arts Standards so this is a unique opportunity for Maine arts educators.

There is still time to register for the Arts Education conference but PLEASE don’t delay since some of the workshops have reached capacity. More information on the conference, Lynn’s presentation, and registration details can be found at https://mainearts.maine.gov/Pages/Media-and-Performing/Conference-Education.

If you have questions please don’t hesitate to email me at argy.nestor@maine.gov.
