The 13th Annual DAMARISCOTTA PUMPKINFEST & REGATTA will soon be here.  My message today is an early call to our past and new volunteer artists to contact me now for painting and carving the giant pumpkins, and painting the hay bales for the 2019 PUMPKINFEST festival.   Many of our volunteer artists have already contacted me in recent weeks requesting to paint and decorate another pumpkin for this year’s festival. My sincere thanks to all of the early volunteers who have contacted me.

PumpkinFest 2019

April 14, 2019

Damariscotta

PUMPKINFEST 2019 volunteers are at work and efforts are underway to host another great festival for Damariscotta, the State of Maine, and all of New England. You’re invited to participate in the annual t-shirt design contest – with a $500 prize.   This year marks the 13th anniversary of the festival to celebrate The Pumpkin. In 2018 the festival recruited many new artists for the t-shirt design contest and artist volunteers who paint, decorate, and carve the giant pumpkins. Maine artists are a major contributor to the huge success of the festival. Tens of thousands of photographs of our artists’ pumpkin street art are taken each year. These photos are saved, shared and circulated worldwide. Also, there are photographs posted around the world of the visitors who are wearing PUMPKINEST apparel manufactured with the festival design created by the contest’s winning artist.

Listed below are important schedule dates for the 2019 Artist Events.

  • MONDAY – 17 JUNE 2019:  T- Shirt Design Contest Submission Deadline
  • FRIDAY – 11 OCTOBER 2019:  Artists at Work – Pumpkin painting, decorating and carving
  • THURSDAY – 24 OCTOBER THROUGH WEDNESDAY – 30 OCTOBER 2019:  Street art pumpkins will be removed and disposed.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact John Bristol at estancia@gvtc.com. If you’re going to participate in the t-shirt design please email John.

Great Salt Bay, Damariscotta – John Morneau

The music program here at GSB is phenomenal! We have a spectacular band program, directed by John Morneau. They just had their Winter Concert last Friday, and it was fantastic! The choral and general music program is taught by Anne-Marie D’Amico. This includes a community group called “Common Threads” which involves parents, students, & teachers, of a wide range of ages, like, 4? to 70ish? Her concerts are quite an experience (kinda like a great church service). Then we ALSO have a strings program, which also has a community part: an orchestra. This program is completely funded through our wonderful PTO (I think anyway. I know they contribute.) That is all very impressive for a K-8 school of 400+ kids, and it’s a big part of what makes Great Salt Bay such an amazing place. When teachers, students, and parents collaborate to make music together, what could be more lovely than that?! It really is impressive, and the quality of each program is absolutely spectacular.

Thank you to GSB art teacher Karen Hight for sending me this information.

Van Buren, SAD #24 – Barbara Corliss Burrill

Barbara Corliss Burrill, music instructor at Van Buren (SAD #24) has taken a dying (dead) music program and this year sent 17 students to THE ALL AROOSTOOK MUSIC FESTIVAL and has at least one student in serious contention for ALL STATE.  She is energetic, she seeks help and pays out of her pocket for other musicians to help her music students.  It really is an incredible turn around.  I’ll forward her email address if you wish.
