Grateful Heart

On this Thanksgiving I am grateful to all the visual and performing arts educators in schools and communities who are sharing the love you have for the arts with learners of all ages. Me and my pet turkey send you warm wishes for a very Happy Thanksgiving from our grateful hearts!

Thanksgiving by Ella Wheeler Wilcox

We ought to make the moments notes
Of happy, glad Thanksgiving;
The hours and days a silent phrase
Of music we are living.
And so the theme should swell and grow
As weeks and months pass o’er us,
And rise sublime at this good time,
A grand Thanksgiving chorus.

Valentine’s Day

February 14, 2024

Sweet thoughts

I know that some days are difficult teaching in today’s world. I want you to know that I think you’re the sweetest to dedicate your life to the noblest profession – teaching. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Love is in the air on this chilly day in Maine. Even with the nippy wind the sunlight has shifted and it feels like spring is around the corner. Of course, keeping in mind that March is a winter month in Maine.

I hope you’ll take a moment today and remember why you entered the teaching profession. I bet it has something to do with love and I know that you pour your heart into creating learning opportunities for all your students. Sending my gratitude and special Valentine’s Day wish!

Happpppy Thanksgiving!

Much gratefulness

Pumpkin pie, my favorite!

I usually stay home for Thanksgiving but not this year. Thanksgiving included visits with family and dear friends, some that I haven’t seen in many years. At the heart of each visit was catching up, reminiscing and storytelling. Our memories collide with bits and pieces of what each of us remember. Rooms filled with laughter, excitement and many kind words. My heart was full over and over and I experienced gratitude. Gratitude that I could make the trip, that I have my health to do so, and for all the kindnesses offered. As my friends and family members age and pass away I am reminded of the importance of connecting, living in the moment, giving to others, and living each day to the fullest. Everywhere I went yummy food was shared while listening, sharing, laughing, and taking pictures. So much laughter and smiling until my face hurt. I am grateful!

As I head back to Maine I am thinking about what Maine education and educators are experiencing over this holiday weekend. I had a long conversation with a friend who has been a teaching artist for over 30 years. Arts education funding has changed across the country in the last 25-35 years. We are feeling the impact of that now all these years later. We have a whole new generation of educators. I am amazed at how arts educators in Maine and across the country are so resilient. In spite of the lack of policy and funding in the arts education, excellent education in the arts continues to take place. Today I give THANKS for your contributions, whether you are a visual or performing arts teacher, a teaching artist, an administrator, a parent who understands the value of arts education or a supporter of quality arts education for all learners, THANK YOU! I am more grateful than you can imagine.

Thanks to Green Meadow Farm for the photo of their young turkeys.

Thankful for you!

Happy Thanksgiving

Today, on Thanksgiving, I pause to THANK YOU for your contributions to education. Your positive impact is amazing! I know that it takes constant creativity, courage, resilience, persistence, experience, planning, a sense of humor, and so much more to make a difference in the lives of learners.

I AM GRATEFUL!

I was reminded over and over this month of how grateful I am to be engaged in education at this point in my life. It seems like the roles of teachers and schools are continually shifting; expanding to meet the many needs of children AND our society and at the same time being challenged by outside forces.

I am grateful

I am grateful to have helped in the planning of the conference that over 100 educators attended on a beautiful Saturday: Truth, Hope, and Creativity: How the Arts Can Deepen Any Curriculum at Thomas College. How fortunate we were to be together in person with other educators learning and exchanging ideas. We stretched our thinking around the importance of teaching Truth. The presenters answered questions and created many more, the learning continues beyond the day.

I am grateful to have visited a high school to learn about their Book Arts program taking place, not in the art room, but in social studies, science, and language arts classes. Sadly, it was a just a week after the active shooter hoax locked down 10 Maine schools. It was a horribly scary situation and sadly for some it didn’t last for only that one day. The students have been working on amazing books that demonstrate their learning of The Depression and The New Deal. (Watch for a future blog post with the details.)

I am grateful to be substituting and spending time with learners of all ages. So enjoyable to see students learning and laughing. Each one has a story and many are anxious to share.

I am grateful to live in a region of the state where theatre programs are thriving. There is no greater joy than to see students on stage. They bring their very best and many times surprise themselves by what they are capable of. Acting for an audience provides opportunities that sitting in a classroom can not. The pride, OH MY, the pride!

I am grateful to be on a committee planning the Sestercentennial (250 years) celebration for my community. Looking Back to Look Ahead will give people of all ages the chance to come together to celebrate our town while recognizing those who have come before us.

Giants

I know that I stand on the shoulders of giants and wouldn’t be who I am today without them. I invite you to think about who has influenced you and taught you. Whether those people are alive or passed away perhaps you’ll take the time to thank them on this Thanksgiving Day. I appreciate you your commitment to education and to show my appreciation I’m sending you flowers!

Happy Thanksgiving!

November 24, 2016

Grateful!

I have so much to be grateful for this year! Taking time today to think about what Thanksgiving means to me, includes my work at the Maine Arts Commission (MAC). I feel so fortunate to work at MAC and to be doing the work that I do. I often say that I am exactly where I am meant to be, and today that rings more true than ever.

So, what I am grateful for? Let me share the ways…

  • I am so very grateful for the work that visual and performing arts educators do to provide an excellent arts education for all students!

  • I am grateful for the opportunity to visit schools and teachers and students of the arts across the state of Maine on a regular basis. (If I haven’t visited your school please don’t hesitate to invite me)!
  • I am grateful for the Maine Arts Leadership Initiative and the collaborative spirit and willingness of teachers to step up and take on a leadership role – sharing their learning and knowledge in the name of Maine Arts Education.
  • I am grateful that so many teachers and administrators completed the Maine Arts Education census survey so we could have data from 95% of Maine schools.
  • I am grateful to live in Maine where in spite of daily challenges, the health of Maine Arts Education is in a really good place! In many school districts the arts are at the center of education and arts teachers are leading the proficiency based education work that is underway. The census has shown us that almost all schools in the state offer at least one arts discipline for learners.
  • I am grateful that so many visual and performing arts educators are committed to always moving forward and participating in professional development to expand and build on their knowledge.
  • I am grateful that the student is at the heart of visual and performing arts education.
  • I am grateful for this blog and list-serv so I can communicate with you and learn about the outstanding work you do every day for all Maine learners and learners throughout the country.
  • I am grateful that you’ve put your trust in me!

Best wishes for a very happy Thanksgiving, wherever you may be today! Thank you for everything that you do to provide an excellent arts education and access to it for every learner!
