Great day for Arts Education!

Biennial Statewide Arts Education Conference participants

Point Lookout Conference Center in Northport on Friday, October 9 was abuzz with Arts Educators for the Biennial Statewide Arts Education conference, The Measure of Success. The day was filled with student performances, celebrations, presentations, networking and intense workshops, conversations, questions, and wonderings. From the opening music performance by Camden Hills Regional High School Jazz Band under the direction of Nancy Rowe to the closing session with a theatre performance of the Adamms Family under the direction of Kim Murphy the day was educational, energizing, and filled with surprises!

Over the next few days on the blog there will be highlights from the conference in words and images to give you a bit of what went on during the all-day event.

If you were able to join us – thanks so much – I hope that you found it worthwhile and that you met other folks to share ideas, your work, and that you learned something from them as well. If you couldn’t make it, please know that the blog posts will provide tidbits but in other similar events its just not the same as being there. I will do my best to describe what went on. IMG_0347We initially started plans for this conference back in January and as you can imagine it takes many people to put all the details in place including those listed below. My apology if I leave someone or place out. I am sure that you will let me know.

  • The Maine Arts Leadership Initiative Leadership Team for the hours they spent emailing, zooming to plan and implement the conference
  • The amazing presenters including Theresa Cerceo and Janie Snider, Jennie Driscoll, Jen Etter, John Morris, Jen Nash, MaryEllen Schaper, Jeff Beaudry, Lindsay Pinchbeck, Catherine Ring, Dan Ryder and Kate Smith, and Rob Westerberg.
  • The Maine Arts Commission staff especially Director Julie Richard, Priscilla Kelley and Chris Norris in the front office, and Linda Nelson
  • Maine Department of Education especially Beth Lambert, the new Visual and Performing Arts Specialist and the financial support from the MDOE

Top Ten Reasons to Attend Conference

Just in case you haven’t registered yet, below are the top ten reasons why you shouldn’t hesitate to register:

10 – Most likely there won’t be snow on October 9

9 –  The food will be much better than school food

8 – Point Lookout Conference Center is a wonderful place to learn

7 – If you don’t attend you will be sooooo sorry!

6 – The biennial conference is ONLY held ONCE every 2 years – are you willing to wait 2 more years until the next one?

5 – It’s going to be a fabulous opportunity to network with educators from across the state

4 – The workshop presenters have been preparing since May to provide an excellent learning opportunity on relevant topics

3 – The morning format of 5 X 5 – nine presentations, 5 minutes long, 5-8 slides on a variety of topics is going to be a fantastic way to learn about several topics in a short period of time. (And they will be fascinating, action packed, and FUN, FUN, FUN!)

Biennial Statewide Conference

Don’t miss it!

MAAI Logo_Color_TxtCtr3LArts Education: The Measure of Success Biennial Statewide Conference is being presented by the Maine Arts Commission’s Maine Arts Assessment Initiative. Now in phase 5, the MAAI has 74 Teacher Leaders who have provided over 100 workshops to almost 1500 educators. We are proud to continually offer high quality professional development opportunities and The Measure of Success proves to continue this tradition.

The one-day conference will be held on Friday, October 9, 2015 at Point Lookout Conference Center in Northport, Maine from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The conference offers a rich choice of workshops facilitated by some of Maine’s finest educators and artists. Maine Arts Education: The Measure of Success conference participants will:

  • Participate in a dynamic format of 5 x 5 presentations (9 topics, 5 minutes, 5 images).
  • Attend arts education workshops that are facilitated by colleagues.
  • Explore assessment methods and strategies designed to expand teaching and learning the proficiency-based education environment.
  • Build connections among the arts disciplines: dance, media arts, music, theatre and visual art.
  • Provide networking opportunities.
  • Learn more about creativity, literacy, authentic assessment, technology, and much more!

Educators, teaching artists and PK-higher education visual and performing arts teachers are encouraged to attend. The event promises to provide participants with a plethora of insights and choices for teaching in the proficiency-based education environment.
