New Bill at federal level to strengthen the profession

On June 22, a bi-partisan group of Senators introduced the Teachers as Leaders Act, a bill championed by National Network of State Teachers of the Year (NSTOY). Senators Chris Coons (D-DE), Joni Ernst (R-IA), Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Jack Reed (D-RI) joined together across party lines to send an important message about critical role of teacher leadership
Acknowledging what NNSTOY has long believed — that teacher leadership is a key to addressing teacher recruitment and retention — The Teachers as Leaders Act authorizes teacher leader development programs through the Teacher Quality Partnership grants in Title II of the Higher Education Act.  The grants would extend the continuum of teacher preparation and teacher development and promote differentiated career paths that foster new professional opportunities for accomplished teachers.
As quoted in the Senators’ press release, NNSTOY President and CEO Katherine Bassett (New Jersey Teacher of the Year, 2000) said, “The nation’s expert teachers know that teacher leadership is critical for solving important challenges in education today, including teacher retention and recruitment. We salute Sens. Coons, Ernst, Grassley and Reed for their leadership in establishing this priority.”

MAAI Teachers as Resources

Teacher Leaders as leaders

Screen Shot 2014-10-19 at 8.15.47 PMResponding to the needs and voices of teachers in the field, the Maine Arts Assessment Initiative (MAA) has begun a series of steps to help all PK-12 Dance, Music, Theatre, and Visual Art teachers develop their own quality work as Maine implements the new proficiency law, Maine Statute 4722-A-Proficiency Based Diploma Standards, that requires all students to display “proficiency” in all subject areas.

The first of these steps is designating past and current MAAI Teacher Leaders to serve as live “go-to” people for advice, talking through problems and ideas and providing support. Between the Leadership Team and Teacher Leaders, there are over three dozen people who have volunteered to be these live resources. Go to maineartsassessment.com, click on either of those two pages (Leadership Team and/or Teacher Leaders) under the dropdown, “About MAAI: who we are”. You will find contact information in red for those who are willing to work with you, as well as what grade levels and subject areas they teach, where they teach it, and a list of topics they have had experience with.

DSC02227As the only grassroots arts assessment entity in the United States, it remains a goal of MAAI to be here in a practical way for teachers in the field, “removing us from the islands” for once and for all. Please take advantage of the work that has already gone on in recent years by respected colleagues throughout Maine, and contact them often as you progress through your proficiency work!

Phase IV Teacher Leaders: MAAI

MAAI Logo_Color_TxtCtrThe Maine Arts Assessment Initiative (MAAI) is proud to announce the new Teacher Leaders who have stepped up to take on a leadership role during phase IV and the 2014-15 school year. The Summit on Arts Education officially launched Phase IV of the MAAI with the Summit on Arts Education held at USM, Portland, July 29-August 1.

The following are the new Teacher Leaders and below them you will find the Teacher Leaders returning for another year from a previous phase. To date, MAAI has provided professional development for 61 Teacher Leaders representing all regions of Maine. These teachers have created and presented workshops to over 1000 Maine educators during the first three phases of MAAI. Please join me in thanking them for taking on the leadership and providing learning opportunities for Maine teachers! MMAAI has 38 active teacher leaders participating during Phase IV! YAHOOOOO!

During the 2014-15 school year you will be able to read their Another Arts Teacher’s Story which is a series of blog post containing the Teacher Leaders stories. You can read the teacher stories from the last three years by searching for them on the blog using the search words “Another Arts Teacher’s Story”.
