The arts are doing great in Maine when it comes to the numbers of arts classes taught by highly qualified arts teachers. The summer report is available and has been collected over the last 5 years by content and level. This information is available by School also upon request. This report and many others on HQT Data are accessible on the MEDMS “Public Portal”, under “No Child Left Behind”.

Though we, as educators, know that qualifications alone do not make a good teacher, setting these basic required qualifications: a Bachelor’s Degree; full state certification; and demonstration of content mastery, has helped cut down on “out of field” teaching. That is the practice of “finding a warm body” to put in the classroom.
We know that the teacher is the single most important factor in student success. That is why my work with the “highly qualified teacher” data is also complemented by my role as coordinator of new teacher induction and professional development. we need to place qualified teachers in schools and then support them, as well as giving them opportunities for high quality professional development.
