Anyone who walks through the State House, the Cross Office Building or the Maine Cultural Building are aware of the childrens art that can be viewed on the walls. The work represents students in grades Pre K-12 and the exhibit was started by the Frist Lady, Karen Baldacci in 2004. She noticed when her husband was elected as Governor that the walls had artwork, but none that represented the children of Maine. She quickly went to work, partnering with the Maine Arts Commission to change that situation.

Today at the Blaine House a reception and tea were held for the exhibiting artists. Each one received a medal, a certificate, and each had their picture taken with the First Lady.

In the First Lady’s words: “It is important to recognize and celebrate excellence in art created by Maine youth. We honor our young artists by displaying artwork throughout our state capital complex for our Governor, Legislators and Maine citizens to enjoy. We thank all students for participating, and our sponsores for generously supporting this worthwhile project.”

Thank you Carol, Argy and Paul for the rare and much appreciated opportunity to meet with so many arts educator’s. Andrea Peterson’s window into the classroom was familiar to many of us, the “teaching artist” performers were excellent and my workshop, TIMES FIVE was lively and informative. The entire experience was a most productive way to spend my teacher workshop day.

  4. Thank you Anne for your comments. It was a fun day and I am glad you found the day productive!
